Sony Ericsson X1 - Out on Vodafone

sony ericsson x1

sony ericsson x1

The Sony X1 ‘iphone’ killer? Well…Probably not, but still looks pretty nice eh?

Key design points I guess are:

  • Arc slider design
  • 3-inch Wide VGA display
  • Premium metal body

Time will tell if the Microsoft based o/s is slow and buggy.

It’s out now and will cost you a minimum of £25 a month on a Vodafone contract and a whopping £400, although pick of the current contracts would be £40 a month, £50 on the phone and in return unlimited Internet and 600 minutes of call time.

Wordpress 2.5 looks great - but why so slow to post

Upgraded to v2.5 smoothly. Everything is clean and nice, image uploader works good etc.

Problem I had was that every time I click to write (new) or edit a post or page, it takes like 2 minutes for the edit page (where you input text) to load. I tried deactivating ALL plugins, restarted apache, disabled xcache, but nothing seems to fix this problem.

After 2 minute wait I am able to write the post as I normally would, but there is another 2 minute hang when I click Save. However, the post is updated right away (as seen in another browser) when I do click save, it’s just the edit page itself has this two minute hanging problem…

Could not find a fix anywhere, but on my work PC was fine… thought it might be a vista thing, but that didn’t seem to pan out.

Bit of trial and error, wasn’t the network wasn’t any plugins but then thought maybe it’s the virus checker, I disabled the virus checker, and it went all quick again!

Added my site to my Kaspersky trusted web safe and re-enabled and all is quick agian.

Might not be a fix for everybody but solved mine :-)

Windows admit there was a ‘rare bug’

The pain of watching vista reboot over and over after installing SP1 might be fixed. In February this year, Microsoft stopped offering its Servicing Stack Update (SSU) KB937287, which is one of the prerequisites for installing Vista SP1. This was because users complained about entering a hard-to-break reboot cycle during the installation process.

Yesterday a blog post on the Windows Update Product Team blog, Microsoft said that the problem with the SSU stemmed from ‘a few unknown and rare events’ during the installation process. Meaning Vista users who’ve already successfully installed the SSU have no reason to worry.

While for those who haven’t already installed the SSU, Microsoft is releasing a fix that will install before the SSU, helping ensure smooth installation of the SSU. The fix will install seamlessly through the Windows Update, Microsoft said.

Need a 3G iPhone? – The wait might be over soon

There are reports that stocks of the current models are already dwindling in the US, and that Apple hasn’t been resupplying shops. Why? Is it because it has a better model primed for launch!

If that wasn’t enough, uber-respected US tech journalist Walt Mossberg – never heard of him? Well he’s one of the privileged ‘golden’ journalists that Apple’s Steve Jobs will actually talk to and he’s made a off the cuff claim that the iPhone will be 3G “in 60 days.” All things digital.

So if you are about to rush out and sign that 18month contract… maybe wait that little bit longer maybe it won’t only. Now I wonder if it will still be only on O2 in the UK.

High-definition channels coming to Freeview

Ofcom have announced a major upgrade of digital terrestrial television that will allow viewers to access more television channels, including programmes broadcast in high definition. Ofcom have said there will be 4 of these HD channels available.

The changes mean that Freeeview viewers should be able to receive up to four new high-definition channels as digital switchover is completed in the UK in 2012, with the first three available as switchover takes place in the Granada and subsequent regions from 2009.

Unfortunately you will have to buy a new Set top box but and if you don’t want to pay for premium HD content you might not be rushing out. Ofcom need to get permission from the government to allow the upgrade, if all goes well then one of the new slots will be available to the BBC, the remain channels will be up for grabs to the successful bidders from the commercial channels (ITV, Channel 4, five, S4C) via Ofcom.

PS3 gets free SONY BD-Live support

Sony has announced today that the PS3 will receive a firmware update that makes it the most advanced Blu-ray player on the market.

The free update will allow PS3 owners to access BD-Live content; special online bonus content might include documentaries, trailers, ringtones and even interactive games.

You will need to purchase BD-Live discs and titles are quite limited at time of writing but will start to flow throughout the year.

Vista Service Pack 1 - Reboot of death

Great I thought. Finally the mystical update to fix all the problems in Vista…. well that’s what I hoped. After a late night install and what appeared to be a flawless install, it all went horribly wrong.

It was so lucky I had a restore point ready, as once the system had installed all the files the system refused to boot. Just went round and round. Not even safe mode would boot so frustrating! All I can say is after running the Restore windows feature twice is the system booted. Thank god. Was time for a complete windows back up :-)
